Unread Mail
Oil on canvas, 120x75cm, 2014-2018
Every day I get mail that I don't look at closely, mostly publicity. I open it, glance at it, and then put it on the pile of recycling paper. Whether I want it or not, many resources are involved in this communication: someone fabricated these papers, someone wrote these texts, took these photographs and made the layouts. Someone printed ist, someone put it in envelopes, and someone brought it to my mailbox. Much raw material and energy, much work of humans and machines is invoved in all this.
During the year of 2015 I have been collecting my unread mail in monthly piles. Instead of regarding it as waste - what I usually do - I honor it in portraits.
Unread mail is part of a larger project about too little acknokwledged phenomena in our culture.
